While I've not sold any BMWs I've used craigslist for an older model Jeep and Honda. Both sold for asking price, the honda within hours. I sold a Porsche through AutoTrader, and the buyer flew across country to pick that up. All three sales were pleasant, and I didn't have any problems with either service. Check the laws in your location for sales requirements (if you should keep your plates, or transfer them, etc...)
The advantage of using your car as a trade in is usually for taxes, as the value of your trade is used to reduce the sale price of your new car. So when calculating your savings through dealer trade-in, remember that. In most cases its better to sell your older car, than to trade it in.
