I use it when I'm driving late at night, say midnight or something on highways and expressways, where there aren't so many cars, so that other maniacs driving like 200km/h can spot me from far away... 
other than that, I never even touch it, since I fell so in love with my eye blinding xenon fogs, and I rarely turn that on either, unless i'm alone in a dark small road or something..

Dense fog use or other severe visibility reduction conditions such as falling snow only. 100 yards or less when on the move a bit further if stationary by the roadside.
And the proviso that there is no following traffic, if you have cars behind, why the hell would you need fog lights on, they already know you are there.
They cause glare and reduce the liklihood of following traffic from seeing your brakelights.
Those who use them other times are boneheads who should not be allowed on the roads.

Can we get all Audi and MB owners in the US to follow someone in one of their cars at night (no fog, of course) with the rear fogs turned on? Is it me or are they the biggest abusers of the rear fog lights?
(And yes, the rear fogs DO blind other drivers behind you...flame away...)

rear fog lights are not fitted to usa cars, but are a legal requirement for a UK car.
Note - these shine directly backwards at the following car, and are unlike front fogs, which create a glow of light on the floor at the front of the car. They are aimed at the driver of the car following, not the road.
Essentially, these are a 21 watt bulb (same as brake light) thats more sharply focused to provide a bright light than can be seen in foggy or snowy conditions. Its illegal to use them at any other time.
At night, in normal weather conditions, they can cause a very bright and blinding light to a following driver.
You are much more likely to have an accident leaving them on as
1. the driver will be dazzled behing you.
2. hes likely focusing on all the names hes calling you for being such an a$$hole to have them on

What's more irritating is cars sold in the US (ex. Toyota) that don't even has an indicator to tell you that your fog light is on and the switch isn't a momentary one so someone can drive with front fogs on all the time and not even know it.
