Re-occurring P0302 OBD code on E60 535i [2008].

Odometer: 655XX miles

Issue initially started with the following codes:

P0015 [Camshaft position]
and
P0302 [Cylinder 2 misfire]

I had started with replacing all the spark plugs [all 6].

After a couple of weeks, P0302 misfire error returned back.

This time i proceeded to change the ignition coil on cylinder 2.

It worked fine for couple of weeks. Again it started showing P0302 code.

This has been going on for a while now. I just keep clearing the code. and it stays fine for couple of weeks.

On my way to work today, i felt the actual misfire today, and it immediately threw the P0302 timer again.

I really don;t want to take it to BMW stealer as they really don;t know what they are doing [from previous experience].

Has anybody experienced this issue?

I would start looking for an intake leak. Then I would look at the injector (it could be clogged or faulty). Have you ran a cleaner through it (I like Sea Foam). What type of plugs are you running? Did you just buy a new coil or did a swap test to see if the problem moved to a new cylinder. What type of coil did you buy? You might need to get the actual BMW code also which will help out a lot with the real issue.

This is where I would start. Troubleshooting with out throwing money at it is the key to saving money.

 

Thanks for the pointers. I have run good amount of injector cleaner through [4-5 bottles of Techron over 6 months period]. All the parts i have purchased were OEM[brand new]. That is the next plan. I am looking to get a BMW code scanner as opposed to generic OBD scanner. Do you have any particular recommendations? I am more interested in the USB cable.

 

Could be the Camshaft sensors or related to the VANOS. Read this thread for some tips.

I had this code after walnut blasting the intake valves on my 535. Turned out to be a "leak" in the throttle body or vacuum lines to intake.
Most advice points to plugs or coils, but I knew they were good prior to performing the intake valve cleaning procedure. I just didn't button everything up correctly. Check vacuum lines and intake connections if the plugs and coils check out.
