I don't think you have the Sensor control set 'on' right then. The standard wiper setting is to stop wiping when at stand-still, then resume when driving. Sensor disables that. YOu cannot push the Sensor button and then manual push up on the stalk.
All these settings are in the manual.
Rain sensor works perfectly for me, once I figured out how to set-and-forget it.

I'll chime in to say that the sensor works fairly well but it doesn't work as well as the one on the E39. I'm expecting it to improve with newer versions of software...

I do understand how it works. I just don't like the way that it does.

I initially had a problem with them, but then the dealer "reinitialized" them and they work fine now.

Thanks for all the input. It seems enough people (mostly in North America) have had problems similar to mine. I am aware of the effect of using the stalk to adjust wiper speed and that is not the problem. After the first two swipes in the sensor mode, I have to adjust the sensor dial to get the wipers going again. I only hit the stalk after the sensor mode proves ineffective.

I did notice in the manual, that if your window is dirty, it could effect things. I would think in the rain, it would not be dirty, but if you have road grime, it may affect it.

Only had chance to try mine a couple of times but so far so good. Definately better than on the E46.
