I have an independant heater option in my 530d. I can just hit a button on the heater remote and after about 5 minutes the car is warm and all windows are de-iced.
It's an option here in Holland and most 5-series here have it. (I don't know the exact workings, but when i turn it on, it smells like burned diesel outside the car, so i guess it just burns diesel to warm the car)

I just leave everything on full auto and turn on the seat and steering wheel heaters. Maybe it's the V8 but my car heats up remarkably fast. No need to do anything except lower the setting on the seat heaters once my butt starts to smoke... ![W00t](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/w00t.gif)

This also worked well in all 3 of my 5er diesels... everything on auto and seat heating on full until it starts to sizzle!
I don't have the steering wheel heater option, so its gloves for me... black leather of course to match the seats

(I've just switched to half-leather seats and that is A LOT more comfortable than leather in these first few minutes went getting into a cold car!)
