1 Car was left over night to program and didn't complete until noon the next day. The dealer had to install a new radiio. They said the radio was not compliant to the current software version.
That's just bullshit, i've got an '04 5-er with the original computer and i've got the latest software on my CCC. EVERY computer in the E60 series supports EVERY software version.
They're just too chicken to tell you they screwed up flashing the computer and they had bricked it. Fortunately it's covered under warranty in your case, otherwise that could've been VERY expensive.

Talked to the dealer today and they said they are doing the update via satellite form BMW Canada.

They are making special arrangements with BMW Canada and updating the car via satellite.

Has anyone had this done before and if yes, what was your experience.

Thank god this is under warranty. Why is this so difficult?

That's BS, they update it over the internet...
Updating via satelite would only be the case if they've got satelite internet (which i HIGHLY doubt...)

No such software as 1-06-03-510_05112. That code belongs to an individual module. It is not the TDS (Target Data Status) which would translate to a PROGMAN or now ISTA/P level (formerly CIP).

General Comments:

More often than not the software update runs more smoothly that some of you have experienced.

As you can tell from my signature I have had my fair share up updates. Not once did I get anything reset like radio or Nav or phone or ??? Only once did I have an issue and that was double entry in NAV as they restored settings before they looked and my NAV addrersses were already intact. So I had to delete one of each address.

There are service bulletins out that definately indicate some modules were not capable of handling some features. This dates back to the MY04/05 era. The bulletin stated that only upon customer request and an approved update (warranty or customer paid) that BMW would replace free of charge any required module (computer or otherwise). Additionally, there are modules that are marginal and fail unexpectedly while in the software update process. Obviuo;lsy this does not happen to everybody, but it does happen.

Then there is the case (as it happens to be now) that BMW introduces new hardware for the software update (and diagnostic) process. They are on their fourth generation system now called ISTA/P (previous version was SSSr2, then SSS then - oh I forget). As in all things new, there are learning curves and growing pains.

And finally, the distribution of software updates takes place in one of two ways; 1) CD-ROM (or DVD now) deliverd by snail mail and 2) over the dealer network. When in dealer speak, he says I am getting the upgrade over the internet he is not lying per se. At various times the BMW internal network name has been "CENTERNET" or one of several other titles. Now if that dealer connects via satellite, as I do at my home as I am in the boonies, would the dealer be inaccurate in stating he is getting the update over satellite?

Please do not disparage or berate all dealer inputs unless you have real facts to back you up. Of course there is some BS but not evrything is BS.

That's exactly what i said...
I said he gets his updates via the internet and updates via satellite would only mean he would have a satellite-internet connection.
You can see his dealer is located in Toronto, that's a big city with a solid broadband network (DSL and cable and even fiber).
There would be no need for a satellite connection as that is way too expensive and would also be unsuitable for the streaming updates BMW provides. (Way too much latency and link-stabilty is not always a guarantee).

That's why i said that statement was BS, when a dealer is my area would say something like this, i'd pick up the car and drive straight off without looking back. They're just straight-out lying to you.
I'm lucky that i found a dealer i can trust and even let me help work on my car and give instructions over the phone for simple jobs like re-attaching my bumper (long story...).
He also updates my software for FREE after updating it the first time (payed a reasonable 160 bucks for that, as it needed a MAJOR update).
