Although I have plenty of tread left on my runflats, I am buying new summer tires this spring. I ordered the Dunlop dierazza z star spec tires, rated #1 from Tirerack. I am scheduled for an advanced driving class, and a high performance driving shool that will take me to the track.

My question is, will the two schools and possibly an autocross, eat up alot of my new tires? Does it make sense to abuse the runflats prior to installing the new tires, even though the new tires would probably handle much bertter at the track?

I guess what I'm trying to say is will three driving events totally chew up my $1080.00 investment?

It depends on number of passes, runs, laps, etc. But, in general, yes, you're going to lose quite a bit of tread and brake pads, too. I used to autocross my 911, and I went through tires and brakes like crazy. Now, when I go to driving schools, I generally use their cars.

Its usually not so much the tread as it is the corners and sidewalls of the tires. With all the tight turning, they take a beating. Brakes are also going to take a severe beating. Its a strange feeling for the first time when you go to hit the brakes and they fall to the floor because they are so hot. If your car has it, make sure you turn the DSC off, or you will be buying rotors at the end of the day. May want to pick up a set of Axis pads before the big day. Finally, make sure you "roll" the car when you get off the track, meaning that every 5 minutes or so, move the car a few inches forward. This will prevent the brakes from heating the rotor in one place and warping it.

It's not all doom and gloom. Track days are an absolute blast and you really get to know what your car can do. The last one I went to (NASA event) I was with my dad and we had identical G35 6MT's, and I can't tell you how much fun it was. It was controlled passing which was great, and we were competing all day for bragging rights. GL, and get ready to have a blast!

Anyone seen any discounted pricing on hi-perf driving schools? I am trying to get my 30 year old son to go to one. I would think that there would be bargains with today's economy.

Also, I apologize for not doing a search on pricing for perf schools. I will do that too.
