Guys, anyone here driven or owned both? I was wondering if the extra 35Hp can really be felt? Your comments are welcome.

Thanks Steve

Most 550i drivers will say the difference is huge and most 545i drivers will say there is no difference at all.

........there is no difference at all

But really, there is a member on this board who achieved a 0-60 time of 4.8 with a stock 545i and he said he owned a 550i down the road and never got better times. I think they are pretty much on par. With the RPi scoop and the RPI exhaust, that HP gap gets pretty small.

The 550 feels faster than 545 but not dramatically faster. This is really more of an incremental difference than a sea change.

Bottom line: either ride is fast.

Hey Steve, how's it going?

As for 545 vs 550

Techincally, 550i should be faster.
Quick research tells me that according to Motor Trend:
2008 550i 60 in 4.8 seconds and the quarter in 13.3 at 105.1 mph

And back in 05, Motor Trend also ran 545i 0-60 in 5.4 and 13.7 at 103.x mph
.6sec difference in 0-60 but .4 at the end of qt mile. Is that mean 545i is catching up with 550i after 60mph?
That would certainly explains what I felt in 550i loaner one day. It had much more tq down low but somehow
I didn't get the same feeling of 'pull' on full throtlle on the highway.

I would say Dinan intake, throttle body, and exhaust would match it on 1/4
and faster on highway runs than stock 550 due to dinan intake make hp top end.

But hey, I'm a bit biased toward 545i

PS PM sent!

Many people have stated that the 550i seems more slugish and less willing to go.

That's true. I have heard a lot of great things about the SAT tranny.

Ok but I'm not sure how SAT can help 'electronically' when gear ratios remains the same regardless of SAT vs Non.
SAT would give your faster responses to gear changes and throttle response but that doesn't mean car is quicker...

Oh BTW, I just re-read the article again, http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/sedans...test/index.html
it stated they ran manual transmission. And the one with 545i was auto.

I know that BMW geared MT 'taller' and AT 'shorter' but still...

Well the SAT doesn't necessarily make the car faster bit it completley changes the feel of the car. Maybe it could be compared to the sprintbooster but I can't say for sure as I have never driven a car with SAT.
