My auxiliary water pump is making a pretty loud whining noise at idle when the heater is tunrned on. Took it to the dealer and they said it's normal operation. Did anyone else have a similar issue? I did a search and could not find much information related to this.

I had simililar problem sometime back. The local dealer replaced the aux water pump, but that did not solve it, than they identified the cause to faulty mounting for the aux pump (apparently it is a problem BMW are aware of an have since rectified the faulty mounting for newer models). It was all done under warranty. If I were you, I would get a 2nd opinion from another dealer(s).

Is the Auxiliary water pump the same as the water pump or are there two?

Thanks! So, then they did replace the mounting afterwards and the problem went away?

There are two, the main one is mechanical, and the auxiliary is electric.

Do you know where the aux pump is located? RealOEM isn't helping me but I am 90% sure I am having the same problem and I'd like to get up close to it to verify.

i see you have a v8. not sure if it's similar to the inline 6, as far as the pump location goes. when i face the engine, it's on the right side behind the radiator, to the left of the filter air box. there are like 2 or 3 thicker rubber hoses going to it. Yesterday, i squeezed those hoses and wiggled the pump a bit. today it wasn't whining anymore, more like a louder hum, which was barely noticebale. i'll see if it comes back.
