Not sure if this is applicable for you guys in the states, but here in the UK you can pay ?50 excess and get the insurance company (well depending on your policy of course) to fix it. They'll get one of the specialist companies to come out to your house/workplace and fix it for you there and then.
I think this might be the only time I can say this - I'm glad I live in Massachusetts. Glass is cover at 100% by your auto policy. I've had my windshield replaced twice . The first time it was done by my body shop and they used OEM glass (had BMW logo on it). The second time (just last month) I had a local glass company come and replace it in my parking lot at work with non-OEM glass. No noticeable difference either way.

It is a comprehensive claim, but still count as claim filed. I totaled my truck for work in February and they paid that off. Right now I don't want another claim against me, I don't want to be canceled due to their "underwritten criteria" for too many claims.
unless your within the first year of your policy the underwriters won't even take a look at your policy. It goes through an automated renewal process unless your policy gets flagged. Typical reasons would be children turning 16, annual mileage discrepancy, DUI, or you have an umbrella policy. I've seen policies that averaged 2 totaled cars a year for the last 5 years.

I did get a new windshield, it was installed by All Star for $600; the Safelite to me, just seemed too way too cheap at $280. Maybe they can do a quality product and installation at that price, but at that price it scares me. The glass that was installed is Sekurit Saint-Gobain - it's made in Colombia. I've never heard of it before, but it looks identical to the original glass, the tinting and dots all seem to be in the same places. These guys had the old one out and the new one installed in less than 45 minutes. I was impressed.
I washed the car the other night (the glue had 4 days to cure) and I didn't notice any water leaks. I didn't point the hose at high pressure at the windshield mouldings though, but as of yet no water leaks. I haven't driven the car yet, but my wife hasn't complained of any air leaks or added wind noise.
My windshield had started to separate from the frame and I could hear a lot of wind noise above 50 mph. I had it replaced at
All Star Glass and have had no issues. The wind noise that was driving me nuts has been eliminated and the rain sensor seems to work
fine. I had to pay my $100 deductible but the insurance covered the rest. The windshield is made by Saint Gobain Sekurit and based on
three weeks of driving experience, I would say that it looks like a worthy replacement for the original windshield.
