Today my wife caught a rock on her way to work. At first she didn't see anything. When she got to work she checked out the car and the windshield and saw nothing, but when she went to lunch there was a huge U-shaped crack in the windshield. She said that it looks like the rock hit it at the upper corner on the passenger's side and spread from there.

I called BMW and they said that it'll be about $2000 for a new windshield installed, a body shop near me that specializes in BMW's and does work for a few of the local dealers wants $1325. Safelite will do it for $275 installed! The only questions they asked me is if the car has the heads-up display. BMW wanted to know if I had the rain sense wipers, adaptive headlights, heads-up display, or adaptive cruise control. Safelite says the only difference is that their windshield doesn't have the BMW logo on it - it goes through all the same testing as the BMW windshields and meets or exceeds BMW's requirements.

What should I do? Safelite is so cheap it makes me wonder.

What have you guys done or paid?

If you're in the SoCal area and found a good repair place - hook me up! BMW of Monrovia sucks!

PM Nerweezy! He's quoted me for this in the past... yet I still have not repaired it...

Quote seemed fair. A lot less than the local body shop you're referring to.

Just for your reference.... I had my windshield by BMW dealer in Santa Clara, CA around $680. 2002 BMW 540i with Rain Sensor. (Got 20% off parts, 10% of labor because of CCA).

I think only night vision make difference....in windshield. ( maybe just a sticker ) I don't see why steering thing will make difference.

If you have heads up display, the windshield will be very expensive b/c it has a special coating. You need the HUD specific windshield or your HUD will appear doubled. Not sure about the adaptive wipers, but I remember reading a post about someone who bout a screen that was not specific for the adaptive wipers, and they didn't work.

+1 with HUD and rain sensing wipers, you need the special windshield. After you fix it...get glass coverage from your insurance company...$1500+ here for the windshield

I had mine replaced a few months ago (rock cracked the windshield), it was a safelite windshield and I have been very happy with it, i noticed no differences nor did I expect to find any... I think the cost was around 500. That was USAA's cost...

Whoa $2000? $1500???

I have had my windshield replaced twice already.

I have HUD and it is more expensive.

Dealership quoted me $800 the first time. But I talked the SA into putting it under warranty so they did it for free.

The second time I was going to pay $800 and my guy at Luxury Motors got me the BMW factory windshield for $500!

Functionally there is no difference between either windshield. Both chip equally easily. The OEM has better tinting at the top and the blacked out areas around the interior perimeter scratch less easily.

PPG glass= 385 installled, OEM= 650 for 04/545 w/rain sensor
I went w/PPG, been thru a few rainstorms, no leaking and no rain sensor issues.
The mask on the PPG looked identical to OEM (i did check).
Band at top of glass seems to be about right, if it's darker or lighter, i can't tell.
Good Luck, mike
