There is another option that is somewhat more limited, but way less complicated. Take a look at this: BMWLogger – Welcome to BimmerSoftware.com
Runs in PC and Mac.
I've not used it to register a new battery, but I have used it to get and clear DME codes.
When getting a cable, be sure and get a K+DCAN cable. That one works on my 2006 E60 and 2009 X5. I have an older K only cable that doesn't work on the 2009 X5.

It looks like it's a data reader only that costs $60. for a twenty spot more you can have a cable and full BMW Tools, which allows you to read, clear, and most importantly WRITE new data to control modules in the car. I don't think you'd be able to register a battery with that since it performs read functions only.

My Ride: 2009 535i X Drive Premium
Ok this may seem like a dumb question but I am new to BMWs....what version of that software do I need? There is the BMWLogger and BMWlogger2. I have a build date of 11/08 on my 535i xDrive.

You have to know what engine computer you have (aka DME). You can find that by visiting Realoem or any parts site and looking up your car's engine computer under Engine Electrical. Based on that yours is MSD81: RealOEM.com * BMW E60N 535xi Base control unit DME / MSD81

Thx for the tip, just ordered one (only 7 left now, supposedly).
I had downloaded a copy from somewhere a while back (maybe bmwcoding) but it didn't work. At the time it wasn't really necessary for my e39, I used a plain OBD SW (Kamen's freeware). Now w/ my e60, I really need the INPA SW.
