Mechatronic sleeve replacement

I thought when you experience those issues, you need to replace the whole mechatronic unit for $4000+? Doesn't the sleeve just seal the mechatronic unit?

Not nesecarrily. The sleeve leaking may cause a drop in fluid, which in turn would make shifts harsher. Especially at lower RPM's (lower gears).
It's a matter of cost effectiveness. the sleeve is only $20, and might very well resolve the issue w/o the couple grand for a new mechatronic. If the issue still persists, you can even try replacing the solenoids inside the mechatronic unit. All 6-7 solenoids can be found online for $130-$140 each, and the sets go for about $600.
If both of those fail to work, you're likely into an area where a remanufactured mechatronic is the only thing left. Because it's so expensive, to me at least, it makes sense to start with the smaller components first.
