Default Trans Error 4E87 gear can be engaged without depressing brake

The mechatronics sleeve just started leaking on my '06 530i. Yesterday, I replaced the mechatronic sleeve along with the bridge seal and the 4 tubular seals.

After putting back everything, I filled the trans with 5 qts of fluid. It wasn't enough (around 6 to 7 qts of fluid came out). So, I am short by about 1.5 qts. I will be filling the remaining fluid once I get another trans fluid container.

I am getting the "Trans Fault - Gear can be engaged without depressing brake"
4E87 - shiflock
P0982.
During the short drive I took for testing, trans didn't engage in to DS mode. Other than that, trans seem to function ok. I am able to move the gear even without pressing the brake pedal.

I will be dropping the pan again today and rechecking the sleeve connection as well as the gear selector cable connection to the mechatronics.

Any suggestions?

Prior to this work, there were no trans errors; transmission functioned flawlessly.
This is on a 2006 530i with 150K miles. I've changed fluid around 50K miles ago.

The cable is not seated all the way in. Remove the cable going into the Mechatronic and reseat. Spend a little more time to make sure you have it all the way in because you don't want to have to do it again. No need to take the pan off.

While inserting the sleeve, I pushed it as far as it can go and then pushed up the plastic latch. Somewhere in the instructions, they mentioned that we're supposed to leave a gap of 2mm to 3mm between the sleeve and trans housing. The only way I can leave some gap is by pulling it out slightly, when I pull it out slightly, the sleeve felt loose; hence, I pushed it all the way in. Then, I connected the electrical connector.

I will undo the electrical connection and recheck, as you suggested.

I am wondering if not having enough fluid is contributing to that error...

2006 530i - mechanical connection from shifter to gearbox or is it drive-by-wire?

if mechanical, check to see that you have the cable at the gearbox connected properly, you'll see it on the left side after you have the pan removed.

if it's E-shift I'd also check to see you have the electrical connector seated properly.

KyleB, the connection between gear shifter and mechatronics is mechanical. I am able to move the gear selector between P, R, N, and D properly, so I am thinking that gear selector connection is good at the mechatronics.

Anyway, I will recheck.

Seajordon and KyleB, both of you are right. Apparently, I didn't insert the sleeve far enough. I dropped the pan, removed the sleeve and reinserted with some persuation with a wooden dowel, it went in further than I had inserted last time around. I think it's because of the new o-rings on the sleeve, it didn't go in easily.

Anyway, I put everything back, filled the fluid, no more errors. Trans is engaging in DS mode. It's all good now.

Thank you guys :-)

Anytime PCY. I knew the new gasket would make it harder to put in so I covered it in oil. It still was hard to do but I kept pushing it til I was satisfied "twice". LOL. I was hesitant at first putting mine in because I did not want to break the only sleeve I ordered.

You're saying after the mechanic worked on your car you were getting the error or it started before the mechanic worked on your car and he was trying to fix it?

Do you know exactly what was done/replaced?

Hi,

Where is located the cable to check?
I have an 2005 630i with the same problem and I would like to check if the cable you're talking about is correctly seated, but I don't know where it is located and the best way to access it.
I guess I could reach it from under the car but I don't want to disassemble parts for nothing.

Regards, Franklin
