The cabin microfilter is really simple. https://5series.net/forums/topic/831...__cabin+filter . You can go to You Tube and there is a DIY there also.
Like what was said in the above post, brake fluid is also a DIY just more equipment is needed.
+1 on using an independent shop.

Forum search is your friend as far as resetting iDrive service reminders.
Also, I went the indy shop route for my first brake fluid service not covered by maintenance plan, and they forgot to check the fluid level in the reservoir before beginning. Resulted in air getting in the lines when the reservoir went empty. The service took three times longer than promised (I waited) as they bled and re-bled the lines to get the air out. I believe there is still air in the lines, since the brakes seem spongy compared to before the service. I am not saying that the dealer would not make the same mistake, but I certainly lost confidence in this indy shop. And the only $$$ I saved between indy and dealer was the $100 for the scope that the dealer does.

you indy shop guy didn't read the DIY instruction posted here before they did the work...always go to a reputable indy shop with experience on BMW. Yelp helps alot when it comes to searching for a good indy shop or you can as here or the the other forum.
