Yes, the US laws require it.

that's why there is no storage compartment under the light switch on the US spec E60. There is additional padding to protect the knees in case of an accident.

Am I the only one that has injured his leg, because I forgot to close the f****** lid to the storage compartment, and the tried to leave the car. Hittin the corner of the lid really really hurts!!!
