anyone can shed some light as to what it would cost for a new valet key (the little key piece that slides into the keyless entry thing???

It's the same on the (continental) European models - using the key to unlock the door will cause the alarm to go off, until the key is placed in the ignition and recognised by the immobiliser. Learned this the hard way once ...

As someone who had a chip go dead in a master key (I still have that key on-hand btw) - everything works normally -until- you try to start the car. In fact, the would-be-thief might think the battery is dead. That was my initial reaction to the problem.
