It is not Ford, it is Tata now, but what's in a name? If it drives well and is faster that E60 (420hp > 300hp) then why not.
whats the point of all this speed and hp if it cant handle on the road?

The XF is a pretty solid handler. It actually posted higher slalom speeds than a 550 Sport in a couple of recent tests.

I like the XF, and I have a Jag dealer pretty close to my local BMW dealer. Motor Trend had a review (XF SC, 550i, E550, G460)which really confirmed what we already know, the 550 was harsher ride which we all like! The only surprise for me was the XF had a faster terminal speed at the end of the quarter mile than the E60 (and maybe the others too, can't remember) which shows a strong engine. One thing is their lease programs won't be as good, or cheap, as the 550's.
I am happy the competition is pushing the envelope, this will make the new BMW F10 better when it arrives. Get what you like.

+1 Balance and decreased vibration are the main advantages of in-line type engines.

However, you can squeeze more displacement in the same physical space with a V-type engine. Infinity and Lexus V-6's are slightly bigger. I think that's a main reason why the newest M3 has a V-8.
BMW gets 300hp from 3.0 litres. The Infiniti 3.7 V6 gets 330 hp, significantly less hp/litre.
BTW, the 1994 M5 got 340hp from 3.8 litre (N/A). BMW could obviousy build a big I6 with big HP. It took Infiniti 13 years to catch up.
PS: Don't forget, the 2001 M3 got 332hp from 3.2 litre, the Infinity isn't close to its hp/litre.

Not a fair comparison: The BMW 3.0 liter/300 hp is turbo charged so its operating like a bigger motor and the M's have redlines over 8,200 RPM and trade lower RPM torque for high RPM HP, not nessarily a great everyday motor for the masses.
The engine design is part of what gives the car its personality, Infiniti is choosing a personality similar to Lexus as they realize for every car they sell to an enthusiast like us, they probably sell 100 cars to normal people.
Neither BMW nor Infiniti is anyway near the design limits for liter/hp, my old Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10 was 1 liter/180 HP, both your 2001 M3 and my 2008 535 are around only 1 liter/100 HP.

i find the jag sexy but in the end, it is what you want but just consider few things like
1) resale value
2) parts
3) insurance price would be higher also i think
4) would you like to modify the car later on, would you find accessories for it
5) i think when it comes to buying a car, one should feel comfortable inside then looks at the exterior coz u r the one who is going to sit in all the time unless you care about exterior more than interior
6) is there people going to sit in the back, would they feel good or they will tell you plz move ur seat forward and you will feel annoyed coz u feel something wrong,
but honestly the jag looks hot also the e60 looks hot also maybe not like the jag little bit less but it is matter of taste, see you can sell ur bmw faster than the jag
welcome

Is there a Jag XF Forum? I think not.

I am trying to decide between a Jaguar XF and a BMW 535i, and I am really having a difficult time. Here are the most significant facts to me so far. Please weigh in:
  1. I think the XF is one of the nicest looking cars I have seen - beautiful body styling. Personally I like it much better than the 535.
  2. I test drove an XF (non supercharged). It was nice, but the 535 is much better in acceleration and driver feel in my opinion. I am hoping to test drive a supercharged XF soon.
  3. I thought the interior was a little too tight on the XF. Especially in the rear seat, it seems like the 535 has a little extra legroom that would make a lot of difference. It is also easy to clip your head on the way into the back seat of the XF.
  4. How will Jaguar reliability and cost to maintain on this new model compare to the 535?
If it weren't for the incredible body styling of the XF I would have gone to the BMW already. However, I may rationalize the smaller interior if the supercharged model has some acceleration to rival the 535.

Any input is welcomed. I know this is the home of BMW loyalists, so take it easy on me.

Thank you!
[/list]
Pardon me if I missed it somewhere in the post, but what vehicle are you coming from and what is the main intended use?

I too am in Awe of the XF horsepower but that's nothing that can't be overcome by Dinan mods. I would go BMW, either current model, new model, or wait for F01 or F10

Q: Why don't the British make Television sets??

A: Because they couldn't figure out a way to make them leak oil.

I drove a 535i and an XF (non-super-charged) within an hour of each other two weeks ago. I've had my eye on the 535i for a long time, but wanted to be sure I tested everything else similar before I bought one.

My overall impression ? The BMW wins, hands down, but let me explain why.

Although I really like the looks of the XF, the ride and the interior left me wanting for more. The Jag had nice acceleration and nice handling, but definitely didn't raise the hair on the back of my neck. Moreover, the interior reminded me of something from an American car maker (like Dodge, for example!) Despite the ultra-cool shift selector and self-concealing air vents, all of the instruments and controls are various rectangles.......... very unpleasing the the eye, and the polar opposite of "modern" looking. The seat was not comfortable, and not very adjustable. The "screen" was touch-activated, no voice control (optional) and definitely not very innovative. I think the back end of the car is very sexy, but when I looked at it head-on, it struck me that I could easily mistake it for an Altima! HOWEVER, Jaguars are marketed towards an older market -- the kind of people that DON'T want to fiddle with iDrive, talk to their car, and generally just want to drive it.

As for the BMW -- I think it's sexy from every view, and that twin turbo and sport package raises every hair on the back of my neck. I agree that the interior is not "posh" but they always say that you sit ON, and not IN a German car. Lastly, despite all of the criticism of iDrive that you hear, I'm kind of a techie, and I think it's right up my alley. Overall, the proof of the pudding is in the driving -- at least for me.

So -- that's my two cents worth on making the exact comparison you bring up. Incidentally, that day I ordered the BMW! (An '09 535i with sport package.) They say production will start the first week of September, and I can't wait.
