And I thought this thread was comparing a I6 Vs V8 engines....this has now become a 535 vs 550 comparison. There are a lot of other things that goes into the car than the engine which makes 550 better (or the other way).

The 535 and 550 are comparing the I6 and V8 engines. I think that the problem that BMW created is it allowed items like the staggard wheel setup, interior finish levels, Xenon active lighting, etc, that were exclusive to the V8 models to be had on the I6 models. When I got my 545 it was clear that the 545 was the car for me. This time because of this it was a tougher decision and the software upgrade made it clear the twin turbo was the way to go.

There's no question that the ability to easily modify the 535 is a major consideration. Personally, I typically prefer to keep everything stock but if you're willing to make the modification I have to agree that it's a major benefit that the 535 has over any other E60. $1200 for the performance upgrades is a pretty good deal.

I mean, it is kind of crazy question, isn't it? Who would prefer a 6 cyl over an 8 cyl engine?

Lol, indeed .

Allow me to introduce you to the LS2 or even the LS1. After a Corvette or Camaro with one of these engines walks your I6 (and gets better gas mileage doing it) your preference might change a bit.

535 is a great car, there's no question, but personally I think the 550 is worth the additional cost difference.
Do the math: $7,000 / 60hp = approx $116 per each of those extra ponies or $3,500 per cylinder.

I can't see spending that much more for a "modest" engine upgrade.

It has come to my attention that the fact that the 6 cyclinders are inline , offer better balance, and hence handling.

EVEN though, the V8 has better performance.

At the end of the day, why would people still want the v8 ?
Oh no, not another I6 vs V8 post

Sorry after it walks the car it will be low on gas-I hate to tell you it is NOT gas mileage friendly. Had an Ls1 camaro-was a monster full of torque and very powerful-gas milage was awful. It is good for what power it produces but no means close to the bmw I 6-I currently can get 20city and 33 highway with an I6. My camaro would be lucky to see 10 city and 20 highway. But your right-GM v8s are probably some of the best engines out there-I would by far give Chev v8s numerous steps up compared to bmw v8s as far as overall design and power. They also leave a lot in the engines-I mean a lot. Simple headers, intake, exhaust type stuff can climb into the 40-60hp increase on an NA engine which is REALLY impressive where as that stuff on any bmw v8 is not possible to see those gains.

Quite frankly bmw shines in making I6 engines. Its v8s are great but I would take an LS6 engine or any LS engine over a bmw engine any day of the week
