So the intercooler already does the cool air job. Nevertheless, cold ambient air should aid the intercooler in its job and with the air being colder to start with, you'll also see turbodiesels performing a little better with cold air. (cold air sensed by MAF = more fuel from ECU)
Without the extra heaters modern turbo Diesels have they would take ages to warm up in the winter, as the cold ambient temperatures would keep the temperature of the exhaust gasses down for a very long time. If you then add using the cabine heater etc., you'd drive many many miles with a cold car.
