My car is being worked on today. I told the SA that the screen appears to go bright and dim on its own. It is kind of a fade in and out. You can only notice it when it is dark. Has anyone seen this before? If you have and BMW fixed it....how did they resolve it?

I tried just adjusting the brightness but that did not seem to have any effect. It is almost like the screen is getting a change in voltage as the alternator spins. Thoughts?

The only thing I've seen that's similar is when driving at night down a road or highway that has street lights postitioned every so many yards. What happens is that the ambient light sensor keeps seeing the amount of light rise and fall each time you drive by a light. The display screen will automatically adjust the brightness up and down to compensate.

If that's what is happening to you, then I think your car is acting normally...

Nope. It actually dims and brightens in complete darkness. Also I do not think it is related to the alternator because it does it during idle, accelleration and steady speed. I am not that concerned about it as long as the screen is not getting ready to fail at 50k.

Gotcha. I don't think mine dims like yours -- I'll take a closer look next time I get a chance...

Nothing new to me. However, this does not happen too frequently, so what the hell. No point letting the dealer open up the car, investigate, tell you nothing's wrong and then overtighten some screws. You end up with more noises, etc.

I think it only dim when the headlights is on because when is dark, if the screen is too bright then it cause glare and sting your eyes. Did you have your headlights to auto on?
