I had a problem last year with my plasma TV. On the upper left corner some of the logos of TV stations burned the plasma. Now I became suspicious about the IDrive Screen. When I start the engine for driving the first menu screen is shown and, unless I choose something else, it stays there until I stop the car and take the key out, or, I switch off the screen, which I'm normaly doing, just in case. I know the IDrive screen is not plasma, it is actualy LCD but, who can assure me that it doesn't burn as well?

I thought this wasn't possible with an LCD screen but my current screen of my Acer laptop is also having burning problems. I hope my car won't have this and if it has it I will take it back and get it replaced (under warranty of course.. I'm the woody and warranty guy )

Nothing to burn on a LCD. The light source is behind a panel of little colored windows that open and close to display the image. Sorry very simple discription. That's why blacks aren't great on LCD's it's hard to block all the light.

Not sure if we have passive or active LCD's.

Ouch, you should give a pop-up warning with that link.

We clearly have active matrix displays in our cars.

Plasma is much more vulnerable to burn-in (as is projection televisions) but LCD's shouldn't have a problem. Once in a while, you may see an "after image" but it isn't permanent -- it's usually due to temperature and other factors, I think.

I think that is the fact with my laptop.. Last time when I turned it off i could still see my windows surroundings in darker black.

I think that the HUD is active matrix as well so I don't think we have too much to worry about.
