Default Idrive (CCC) Failure - Battery Drain (Advice on my plans?)

Hi 60ers,

Got the infamous SOS error and after a few days Idrive goes out completely. CCC fans kept running and draining the battery. My 5er has finally nailed me with a breakdown.

I've disconnected the battery when the car is not being used. Instead of this, I've decided to remove fuse 18 (NAVI) and 79 (Idrive). The humming noise stopped so I hope no more battery drain. I did hear a faint hum in dash but maybe this is something that shuts off.

Here is the plan.

1) In a few days, I'm going to pull the CCC from dash and check the connections and a fuse I've read about. Prior to its permemant outtage, the Idrive flickered but reset after I hit a pothole. Maybe something is loose.

2) If there isn't a loose connection, will disconnect the DVD and see if the Idrive screen comes back on. I want to isolate if its just the DVD. BMW stocks these in numbers so its likely a widespread problem. Not sure I can isolate this for sure. BTW. My DVD NAVI disk is stuck in there. Its only $150 or so for the DVD module and I could try and replace this. I could be throwing $150 away if its really the CCC unit.

3) Buy a refub CCC unit from BMW for $800 or online for $700 BMW Tischer. Install myself and let someone code it. I'm not sure if the CCC price includes a DVD module or not.

4) I got a service engine soon light. Assume all the messing around with the battery requires BMW to clear the codes. I did notice error sign flash once (symbol looked like a radiator)
5) My car is 2006. While fixing the CCC issue, does it make sense to get an Ipod connection. Anything I'm missing here?

Any thoughts out there on this? I'm sure a bunch of folks have faced similar issues.

Looking forward to any feedback.

CVT

We had a similar thing happen to our '06 530xi. As you said, we pulled the fuse which stopped the battery drain. Ultimately, we bought a refurbished unit from BMW and had it coded to the car. This resolved our issue completely. Not cheap, but fixed...Good luck!

EDIT: Our DVD was working; the NAV DVD was still visible in the screen and if you put a CD in the DVD, you could play tracks that way. Our CD and radio had no sound...hope this helps.

Do not buy a dvd unit that is a waste of money when you are not sure. You can shop around for a used unit. I got one for $200 dollars. Be aware however that if you get a used CCC your voice command will no longer work. If you go with a refurb from BMW it will cost you a whole lot more but everything will be back to normal. It doesn't matter if you get a ipod unit now or later, the only difference is if you are getting it installed along with your CCC at a dealer, would be cheaper then, but if you do them separately with someone other than at a dealer it wouldn't be much of a headache, either way a simple job.

Thanks Guys.

The only way I'd just buy the DVD is if the Idrive comes back on with old DVD disconnected. Its probably a long shot that its just a DVD problem. The constant fan hum suggests its the whole CCC module.

I plan to DIY the CCC with a BMW supplied unit and then get it coded. Thanks for the input on the ipod.

I'm pulling the battery cable to make sure there is no drain. BTW. Pulling fuse 18 disables your instruments and importantly turn indicators. The idrive fuse 79 didn't seem to do anyway, didn't stop the fan noise. Fuse 18 did that.
