Ya what rody said... with thouch screen and a moving car i tend to poke at the thing next to where I intended to poke. HEY STOP!
With iDrive it is easier.... the "coolness" factor of touch screen isnt there but I like it and I'm pretty sure I prefer it.

Yeah, I agree - I'm not suggesting that we get a touchscreen LCD. I'm saying that BMW could replace the knob at some point with a flat pad, either one that's blank, or has the outline of keys, or a wheel on the surface to provide a guide along with a button in the middle - like the iPOD. By either tapping in input or using chords (multiple finger strikes at once in various configurations), or gestures (moving a finger or cluster of fingers in sweeping directional motions) more functionality could be infused into the system.
The most basic wheel movements we use, the left-right-up-down could easily be mimicked. If you own an iPOD, you already use touchscreen gesturing when you move your finger around in a circle to scroll. Why have a physical knob at all?

I like the iDrive knob myself. I never have to look at it, only the screen. Anything with buttons will draw too much attention away from the road.
If they're gonna replace it with anything why not a trackball?

[/quote]Agreed. The fact remains though that we're in a transitionary period for all types of human/machine interfaces - I wouldn't be surprised if we saw big changes in the next decade or so. It will take some time to get everyone on board.

The more you think about how Idrive functions the more you realize that this system was designed by people that are passionate about Driving! With Idrive, voice commands and HUD you can control and get information without being distracted from driving. BMW is far ahead of other car companies IMHO.
