I had a touchscreen on the Acura TL-S we had before the 5er.
Touchscreen is very easy to use but it does require a little more of your attention. That's fine if you're parked but it is more of a distraction while driving.

What rodybmw said!
I have a touchscreen on a Honda and it gets to be a pain to keep looking at what you're doing. Also, I like the way the E60 CID is far enough away to have a "hood" over it to sheild it from the sun, etc. On the Honda, there is a lot more glare on the screen in the daytime because it needs to be reachable by the driver.
Then there's all the smudge marks...

[/quote]No need, the 2006 manual lists them and gives usage examples.
The gesture pad I'm suggesting is capable of being programmed to discern subtle differences in -movement- which can be assigned to simple commands, or complex macros. It could actually require -less- attention to operate.

One of the original developers of I-Drive made a very good point:
When you use your computer, you don't look at the mouse. The same thing applies with the I-Drive knob. You don't need to look at it in order to use it.
With touch screens, you must look at the screen EACH time you must do something.
This allows the screen to be closer to the windshield, making the car safer.

'i got it have my idrive'
I agree too. I think those who dont like is because they dont "own one".
This is even better -- my friend at work was telling me how lousy the idrive is (he does not own a bimmer) now he tells..oh man ..i wanted to get a 3 series..but it does not come standard with i-drive --uh? -- he puzzled me for a while

My only gripe for the i-drive is that the knob is not in such a great place. When driving and manual and having someelse change the rasio or cd, it gets a little crouded . My hands on top of theirs and its a little annoying.
