You did exactly what I have done on most (not all but most) of my other cars. Read reviews and picked cars, especially those for basic transportation, based upon their reputation for reliability.
When I purchased the 545i I knew BMW was not known for reliability, and the 545i in particular was a stinker. But I wanted to couple balls out speed with outstanding handling at a reasonable price and it fit the bill perfectly.

I agree, my E60 replaced an SRT8 Jeep, that was getting 9 mpg and costing me $750/mo in gas alone. So the LAST thing I wanted was a V-8 draining my wallet. Instead I chose the I6, and the difference in mpg is astounding, I have achieved 35 mpg. I do really miss having the power of a V-8 though, so the replacement for my E60 will almost certainly have a V-8 in it (I want a 550).

Just do a google search, my BMW 5 series won't start and you will see that 5series.net will be one of the first listings. People with problems seeking information. Not saying that BMWs are as reliable as say a Lexus though.
