Xou need a CIP update and MP3 playback needs to be enabled by your BMW tech after the update.
Then your CD player is able to provide MP3 playback, while the CD changer remains unable to play MP3's.

My understanding is that there is a hardware limitation that will not permit MP3 playback in 2004 MY E60's WITHOUT NAV. This has to do with the fact the early production cars had Business and not Professional radios installed. This reportedly changed in 2005 MY. Those who have had success have used the DVD slot in the NAV for MP3 disk playback not the CD slot in the head unit.

this would seem correct, I have business nav in my nov 2003 car, and I only have one slot to use, the nav's dvd slot, and this works for mp3. I dont have any other slot to try!

"the dsc light has been coming on and then goes off when the car is left turned off for a while" is a good way to blag a software update without cost....then just pay the small fee to have mp3 activated

It needs to be activated after the update.
