Uh.......not true. They get no "cut" from tickets paid, nor quota. But that is amusing.

I'm sure the hour course you took is akin to their academy training.

I hear you, brother, but there is no need to call him "pig." He's just doing his job. I know that most of us think 85 is not that fast, thanks to our smooth and powerful machines, but 85 is quite an elevated rate of speed, esp. in a public roadway. You should contest the ticket and take no bargain down. The bargain will only save you a few $$, but it will still cost you lots of $$ in the form of higher insurance rates.

Here's what I have done on several occasions, to get out of a ticket. I usually show up to court well dressed and show lots of respect to the judge. When the judge asks me to state my case, I ask if I may question the trooper (yes, you may, it is your right). Prepare a whole bunch of questions well in advance, designed to make him change his story, after you have asked a few questions. Unless you were a complet a-hole, chances are the cop won't remember you from Adam. He will probably read the info stated on the ticket, to which you may object telling the judge that he should be recalling the events from memory and not just reading them. The judge may or may not sustain your objection.

Next you start asking obvious questions, like "what color was my car?" If he just reads "blue" from the ticket, ask him "what shade of blue, light or dark?" traffic conditions, how many people were in my car? Blah, blah, blah. The objective is to make him say as many "I don't recall" as possible. Next ask him when he first noticed you. He'll probably give the standard answer, "you were weaving in and out of traffic." Make him draw a diagram of the highway, including nearby exits and your approx. position in the map. Next try to remember something notable that he said, for example on one of my cases, the cop had said to me that he noticed me because I had just come out of the exit like a "bat out of hell."

So after he perjured himself with the standard answer and drew the little map, then you ask, "do you remember saying to me that you noticed me when I came out of the exit like a "bat out of hell?" In my case, the genius said "Oh, yeah, now I remember, you WERE that guy who came out of the exit very fast." At this point you nail him with, "trooper, but didn't you just say a minute ago that you first noticed me because I was weaving in and out of traffic? You even drew that on your map, didn't you?" Mine said "yeah, i know I did, but I guess I didn't really remember you until you mentioned the bat out of hell." At this point, you turn to the judge, and in your calmest way, you point out how the trooper came unprepared to court and that he changed his story because he did not have a true recollection of the event. You say, "Your honor, I respectfully request to dismiss due to the incompetent witness." The judge will agree, give the nice trooper a stern lecture about coming to his court unprepared, and WILL dismiss the case. Take your time, you can ask him questions for an hour as long as you're building your case. The best part is that he cannot question you since you are neither a witness nor an accuser. If he tries, ask the judge to remind him that he can't ask you questions. Try it, works like a charm. I actually received a round of applause from the pissed off crowd, on a couple of occasions.

Good luck, let us know the outcome.

Sorry to hear about your ticket. Were you respectful with the CHP'y? That helps to get the warning vs. the actual ticket. He probably could have been cool and let you off with the warning, but can't fault the guy for doing his job tho, no need for the "pig" comment IMHO. Either way, hope he doesn't show up to court and things get resolved to your satisfaction.

Ditto...no need for the pig comment - he's just doing his job. I have a good friend who is a CHP and he's generally pretty cool - but start up with an attitude and your not going to get a break, you were, after all, speeding and got caught. FWIW, I got a ticket last month and deserved it - was going 86 in a 55 and he gave me a break by writing it at 65...that is a break in CA and he didn't have to do that. So I paid my fine and am doing the internet traffic school thing - so all will work out in the end, (I just have to be mellow for the next 18 months so I can qualify for traffic school the next time around).

I hope you come out OK but - give these guys a break - they deal with a lot more serious stuff than pulling over speeders and I'm glad they are out there keeping our highways safe from (not you - as you were only doing what most of us do everyday - speeding) but idiots who take ignorant risks with others lives while driving stupidly.

I don't think the shield is legal in NY State and it is not clear so you might get a ticket?

Not sure what you say to the cop when he asks about it?

Also not sure what type of ticket you would get for the shield?

While I agree that some CHP can come off a little strong... to call a law enforcement officer a "PIG" is just wrong. AND to blame someone else for YOU breaking the law is wrong as well.

I've often found that the outcome of an encounter depends on how much attitude you give an officer. Speaking as someone who is in federal law enforcement, it would seem that the public seems to forget in our line of work we risk our lives daily. Each time a car is pulled over it could turn into a violent or fatal encounter.

Im sure we are all hard working individuals who give an honest days work. For most, the way they can evaluate if they had a productive day is by the amount of work they got done or amount of products they sold. In law enforcement you had a productive day if you made it home alive. Sure, cops can be assholes... but a little respect goes a LONG way.
