Sorry to hear about your ticket. Were you respectful with the CHP'y? That helps to get the warning vs. the actual ticket. He probably could have been cool and let you off with the warning, but can't fault the guy for doing his job tho, no need for the "pig" comment IMHO. Either way, hope he doesn't show up to court and things get resolved to your satisfaction.

Do you guys have the "12 point system" over there too? In most european countries when you get done for speeding, you usually get (along with the fine) 3 points on your license. Once you reach twelve your licence is suspended for a while.

I don't know how I've managed to remain points-free since 1991, I really don't. No radar detector either. I generally never go more than 20% over the limit except for short bursts.
depdening on the type of ticket; infraction or misdemeanor they give 1, 2 points or no points...i think if you get 3 pts w/in an 18 month period they might suspend it, but i'm not sure. There is traffic school (8 hr class w/a cop) to avoid a point in your record.
Some tickets do come w/a pretty hefty fine though. eg: red light = $450 + 1pt, unsafe lane change = $320 + 1pt, carpool = $400 (i think) no points though;

At least in SoCal cops are not the most freindliest people on the road or streets. They think they are all heroes and all of them get brain washed at the academy - they are so annoying. They all talk to you as if you're a piece of dirt.

yeah, i plan on contesting it and pleading not guilty. I just hope the pig doesn't show up.
Not to be a buzzkill, but i cant think you really feel you should have gotten a warning for doing 20+ over the limit, do you? I have had a number of tickets in my life (more than I should...), and while they're pissers, 20 over is definitely not going to get any breaks. Under 10 is usually warning material here.

I dont know about your jurisdiction, but most times the police get an appearance fee for having to go to court - somewhere in the $25 range here in KY for each case. My point is that if they have 3-4 tickets set on a particular day, its worth their time to show up. Dont count on a case of the blue flu - just so you're prepared and dont waste unneccessary hours at arraignment. I'd hate you to waste the morning hoping they skip. And, often times, the prosecutor gets one continuance without consequence - so it could cost you some time.

My advice is to pay a lawyer $50 to $100 (not sure about your market) and have them get the ticket amended to "Defective Equipment", which is usually a non-moving violation and wont effect your insurance rates.

And by the way, its a little harsh to call him a pig. Dont get me wrong - I've met plenty of asswipe cops (just like plenty of asswipe lawyers, doctors, car salesmen & others), but generally, they're just doing they jobs, as much as it sucks to admit.

Good luck.

While I'm not a zealous defender of law enforcement, i had a good friend (a local deputy) who was shot last summer and killed. Trust me, while many are dicks, at least you probably dont have a risk of being killed during the day on your job.

Sorry I really can't understand your stance here. Sure I wasn't there, but I see it like this: you made a mistake and got punished for it.
No reason to blame anyone else.

We all get annoyed at things like this...even if we do know it's our own fault. Just need to take a deep breath, count to ten then post.....

Sorry to hear they got you. The 5 is so fast and smooth it feels like 60 when you are doing 80.

As far a radar detector I am not sure that they provide much help since cops around the NY Metro area all seem to use Laser.
From what I understand the laser detectors really do not provide any warning?

The best thing for laser is Blinder or ZR4 attached close to the license plate, I don't see how a regular radar detector mounted high up would be that effective. You need a detector mounted near the main targets (license plate and headlights) I don't know if they are using laser in NJ but there's still a lot of radar.
