FWIW: I also have an E38 (98, 195k miles) and just recently purchased a '04 545i, 88k miles about two weeks ago and have only driven it about 30 miles (x-mas present for wife waiting in secrete storage). Anyway, the car is fairly well loaded and I purchased it retail for $16,250. Options: HUD, F&R PDC, Navigation, Bluetooth, cold weather package, sport package, comfort package, premium sound package, rear shades, etc.

Car runs good, but has a fairly significant oil leak that I am guessing is the valve covers. Other than that, runs good. Black interior, sapphire black exterior.

Deals are out there, just be patient. What I noticed shopping around is that the 545i's generally go for about $1k less than 530i's. I guess people are afraid of the 4.4L engine and the coolant pipe issue.
