Im going to go out on a limb here, but this is how I see it.

- The Average age of E60 owners is probably (and I use that term with the utmost meaning) lower over in the US than it is here in the UK. This is probably, as mentioned, due to cost of purchase, taxation & general running.

- I am therefore assuming (same disclaimer as previous) the younger blood are more into modifying & tuning their vehicles, leading to more US Mods than in the UK.

- However, as there are more E60 owners from the US on this forum, we see alot of mods from there.

- The UK modders, are usually the ones we see on the forum. Where there are plenty of US members running stock setups, off the top of my head, most of the UK members have modified their cars, or had something retrofitted etc. We dont see many UK members (Active members, rather) that have not modified their vehicles.

Just my 2pence/cents
Not sure about that. I'm 41 and I am still in love with cars and tasteful modifications. The US has always been in love with cars.

I wouldnt say we had a collective mentality couldnt be further from the truth, more like we are beaten down and live under regimes that we have little power over. The UK government just sees the motorist as a cash cow, they force policies on us because they have little to fear from the public its not like we have a constitution. They didnt allow the people to vote on joining the EU treaty because they knew that the public would have rejected it, we have a PM who is shit scared of calling an election because he knows he'll lose . I could mod the ass out my car but i would end up paying over a grand for insurance for a year which I dont think is reasonable.

I'd move to the US in a second but its not that easy + its nigh on impossible in the current economic climate.

Apologies for wandering off topic, but people looking at the UK from outside dont get the full picture. We dont all wander about in tailored suits and wear top hats, we are ordinary people like you but with a shit government and no hope of the next being any better. Now where did i leave my rope....

Couldn't agree more!

It seems very few people outside the US really have tuneable cars. Most are on diesel and that also 520's. So for exterior mods, there's no problem, but outside of a sprint boost, is there really anything worth the money to improve the performance?

That being said, it just seems that people on this board in Europe have non-modded cars. I'm sure the 540 or whatever they have in Europe that's the top of the line model, has owners that mod them.
Are you saying that a diesel is untunable? To be honest I dont think you know what your talking about if you are. The diesel engined cars that BMW make are highly regarded for their performance, not only do they have great performance out the box but you get far better gains by remapping a BMW diesel than trying to remap a petrol engine. I previously owned a 4 litre V8 7 and a 330 but neither felt as quick as the 525D i now own, diesels have amazing torque figures compared with petrols.

Do some research, in fact ask any of the guys with diesels here about performance. Even Audi are bringing out an R8 with a Diesel in it, some companies are now selling their sports models with diesels in them. People want economy but they also want to be able to put the foot down at times.

Bob, Sadly Audi are ditching the Diesel R8, because of the cost involved in maufacturing such a high performance engine on what will probably be a low turn over of cars. Shame!
