try changing oil at 7000km to 8000km and spark plugs at every 2 oil change.
also the install SB
I never trust the computer on BMW cars or any car for that matter.
install the SB, i thought the SB would give you worst milage.

I may have a fluke here!! 2004 530i and I'm getting a very respectable 28 mpg. I drive about 90% highway though. Very constant 70 mph the whole way. Then again, I have been called a "grandma" when it comes to my driving.

In all seriousness, is anyone aware of a way to get one of the BMW diesels in the US-- like the 2.0 or the 525d?

I understand that Volkswagen and Honda will introduce cars in the US this fall that use low-sulphur diesel. They claim 50-60+ MPG.

I average 19-23 city and 30-36 highway. If I can remember correctly, I can usually get about 450-500 miles on a full tank (18.3 gallons U.S.). I am thinking of installing the Fitch fuel catalyst on my car. It has been tested with good results for horsepower/ torque and also fuel consumption.

Yes, I believe you can already buy volkswagens that use low sulphur diesel that get 50-60mpg. I do not know of a way to get a hold of one of the bmw diesels over here in the states other than through an import/export company. It would be nice to have one and either make your own biodiesel or get some veggie oil to put in the tank. Cheap/free fuel and 50-60mpg.

In City peak hour avg 36Km/h I get 12l/100km

Converting to US measures that is avg of 22.3mph @ 19.6USmpg

And in hwy driving avg 100kmh I get 6.2l/100km

US measures avg 62mph @ 38mpg
agree with your comments on the city cycles around Sydney in the peak hr.
I do just over 10xl/100km during the post9am peak hour.

So anytime from 10am onwards from the SW M4 to North Sydney, sees me to a little over 10.+L/100km.

I think thats not bad, and just take it easy on the M5 and Outhern Cross drive. to get me to N.Syd.
But the car is using an averageof 12L/100km as the rolling average of consumption.
Our US friends have nothing to complain about when it comes to petrol prices.

'04 525i with the 6 speed. I drive 90 miles to and from work every day in New Jersey, 50/50 mixed local stop and go and highway at 80 mph. I average 31-32 mpg but can get up to 35 if I baby the car (put into high gear asap, coast up to stops, etc). Nobody can believe I drive this beautiful bimmer and get such great milage!

I have a 2005 545i and we bought this about 4 weeks ago and I love this car. By far hands down the best overall car IMHO. Anyways, my dilema was MPG between the 530 and 545 as well. We do like 90% hwy driving and after talking and researching the big difference between the 530 and 545 in gas mileage is city driving. I was told that for hwy driving the gas mileage is almost negligible. We get 23.5 mpg with our 545i but that is like 90% hwy driving.

I have an 07 525i and am averaging 26mpg overall. I have all stop-and-go traffic to work. Highway mileage is 35mpg at 75mph. I will gladly give up some fuel economy to have a car that is a pleasure to drive and not a death trap in an accident than have a bottom line vehicle, like a Prius, just to save a few dollars at the pump.
but in the consumer report the 5 series did horrible. so how can you say that not drive a death trap in an accident.

To me the 5 series looks pretty safe.
