Default Gas Cap panel not clicking in.

Hey y’all so i get out to my car today to find that the panel that covers the gas cap and all won’t go flush with the body anymore... I’ve tried holding it in while locking the car to have the deadbolt lock it in place but it will try and lock and then just give up? Anyone have a DIY fix for this or has had this happen to them in the past and fixed it? Any help would be appreciated!!

I have never considered this issue but now I am. I wonder if the mechanism is controlled by a fuse? I also have a 2004 E60 (525i) and would be perturbed if the door/flap locked shut and my gas tank is empty.

I had to have the plunger replaced. My car was still under warranty and so it did not cost me anything.
