Default Engine light issue - not sure why

Hey all,

I have a reliable 5 series auto (2003, 530i) and engine light has come on. Recently had a full service, and engine light has come on since. It has 120,000 on the clock, and has not missed a service.

Can't pinpoint it at all. I have considered the main contenders but wondered if there is anything common for the car which could be recommended

So far I have looked looked at:

- Potential head gasket issues, no white smoke from exhaust
- coolant levels - correct
- oil levels - correct
- fuel cap (slightly cracked but nothing which should cause seal to cause issues)

I sometimes hear a slight knocking over bumps but there is no knocking when engine is running. When driving there is no loss of power, and nothing which is notable. If anything, the fuel might be going faster but this is the largest car I have owned.

Any suggestions from anyone would be appreciated 👍

Without codes, you're just wasting your time. Where did you have the service done? I would start there.

First (and most important) suggestion... hook up a scanner and read what the car is trying to tell you by illuminating the CEL. There are literally thousands of possibilities when the CEL comes on.

Ok, found the code error

error code is po444 evap system purge control valve 2 circuit open. Seems like a basic thing to address but depends on where it links to. Lots of info online - is this a common fault?

Common issue after a lot of miles and easy to replace.

Hey, thanks for that. Is the part easy to source? I spoke to a parts dealer and they had no idea what I was on about

You can grab one anywhere just google it and you'll find it. I think I purchased mine off ebay years ago
