i dont think the e60 is the "most timeless" bmw. i do think that this bmw will stand the test of time though. i would say the most sought after bmw in my opinion is the 2002. i personally love the e60 though. i will never forget where i was when i saw the e60 M5 in person for the first time. on the corner of abercorn and wilson in savannah GA in a pawn shop parking lot. i suspect it was the owner's ride. it was alpine white and amazing.

I think Bangle's 5 and 7-Series represent the greatest departure from traditional BMW styling up to this point. Previous generations were more evolutionary, while the e60s are revolutionary. Even the e90 proved to be less of a departure from the e46 IMHO, as I think they feared scaring off the large meat and potatoes 3-series market.
If you put an e36 next to an e46 next to an e90, you can see the lines and angles slowing becoming rounder over time. The e39 to the e60 was a quantum leap of design thought. It's as if the designers hadn't seen a BMW before, so went at it with a completely open mind. The e60 is the only car other than the 911 that I made plans to buy the minute I saw it, even though it was a few years down the line.

I asked because that was what I had before...and it was indeed a pleasure to drive, even at 90K+ miles. If I could have retrofitted that rascal with comfort seats, I might have driven it another 100K! I was always amazed at the way it smoothly pulled up a hill, even without gearing down...and there was nothing the road could throw at it that it didn't handle amazingly well. There was just really no difference in how it handled when I bought it and how it handled (and ran) when I sold it. I really thought about keeping it, but it didn't seem to make sense to insure and maintain two cars. In retrospect....I might make a different decision.

If you dig AW M5s, you should come to our July 25 meet. There will be at least 2 of them there -- Joe's and Richard's. C is also coming in his M5 -- the most modded M5 I've ever seen in person.

My dad had a 1976 2002. It was a wonderful car. Dad adored that car. He modded it like crazy and when the engine went, he replaced the engine -- not the car. He drove the car for over 250,000 miles.
