It's too long ago I used mine, so I have to check it in my car first.

But what I remember is, there is a position to unlock the menu. The code you have to enter by pressing the button is the last seven nubers/digits of your VIN added.
I'll check it today and post the instructions then.
But I'm pretty sure they can be found somewhere on the forum...
I was just about to post a reply asking about this - I had a play with the menu earlier, could only get number 2 (system test) to work. Got to the unlock menu but wasn't sure what number to put in - will try this later on

Thanks for the info Iceman. I also got stuck at the 20 menu option.

Do you think this is the kind of stuff that would be available at the BMW TIS website? They offer a day long, 30 day and 1 year package that allows you to get into thier entire system and get stuff.

Thanks

With reference to the question of displaying "M5 tacho" on our HUD - I'm pretty sure it's not doable as the rpm indication source information is fed from the DME.

DocHorror and I are going to a electronics specialist in a few weeks and we will have this confirmed or not.

thanks Iceman, looking forward to see the tach in my HUD! I am a bit unclear on the code you have to enter..

I searched and found this HUD unlock, but only furhter confused me

So, unlocking the HUD menu, will allow the HUD on a non M car to show the tachometer in the HUD?

The hidden menu is just a service menu. Not really a help for the driver.

Here is how you enter the menu:

Key in ignition, engine does not need to run, but the key needs to be turned all the way to the last position before engine start.
HUD needs to be switched on.

Press HUD button for about ten seconds, the HUD now switches to the hidden service menu.
Press the HUD button until you reach position 19.
When on position 19, hold the button pressed for about two seconds until another menu appears on the right, next to the menu you are in allready.
In this menu the position 1 shows LOCKED, position two is for the code.
You now need to enter the code, by pressing the HUD button as many times as needed.
Your code is your VIN's last seven positions added.
In example:
B123456 = 21
Once you have entered the code, hold the button pressed fro two seconds and the right menu disappears.
You are now back in the left part of the menu, where you can select another position now.

Again:
To enter, hold button pressed for ten seconds until menu appears.
To move in the menu, push button as many times as needed.
To enter a submenu hold button pressed two seconds until submenu appears.
To switch back to main menu hold button pressed for two seconds until submenu disappears.
To exit menu hold button pressed for about five seconds until regular HUD appears.
Code: add digits of the last seven positions of your VIN.
