Why else would you carry one?
And yes, this is a serious question.
Everyone on here that carries seems to be suggesting it's for self defence "in case" they are robbed. How is that not being insecure?
I take it you didn't read the rest of my post where I spelled out that the majority of us(as in 99.99999%) DO NOT carry personal firearms.
I'm using the term "Insecure" in the sense of "not being self-confident. As in it's irrational. There are times where carrying a firearm(police, or say someone who leaves thier place of business the same time every day with large bank deposits) or even IMO having a firearm in your home is rational, and not insecure.
The number of people with no real reason to carry a personal firearm, but do anyway is IMO the overwhelming majority. Whether it be from "insecurity", the need to compensate for lacking in other areas , or raising one's self-esteem, I have no idea. I'm not a psychologist nor did I stay at a Holday Inn Express last night. My point is just like the rest of the world thinking we were all cowboys at one point, if y'all have the impression that we all walk around with a fuggin shoulder holster with a 6" S&W .44 like our national symbol-Dirty Harry, you're all wrong, and are generalizing us just like you all accuse us of doing of you.

Don't get me wrong, I like guns and I have passed an RAF Marksman course. It's just that guns belong on a range, not the streets.
That way well be the answer ... get them off the streets. How? If we could do that I might feel better.

But, then only the government would be armed. That makes me even more nervous!

Many of the "Framers" dealt with the 2nd amendment so the people could protect themselve from another oppressive government.

Yes I did read all of your post. I guess you misunderstood my reply. When I said why else would you carry one I meant 'you' as in the people that do carry guns, not you personally. I know the majority don't carry guns but we're not talking about them. We're talking about the ones that do.
As you say, the ones "with no real reason to carry a personal firearm, but do anyway is IMO the overwhelming majority". Why is that? My opinon would be for the majority of law abiding citizens it's insecurity (i.e. they feel unsafe). For those less law abiding then the reason is obvious (but why not, it's their "right" isn't it?).
I've been to the US numerous times. I don't think you're all cowboys and I don't think everyone carries a gun. Not once have I suggested otherwise. However, I do think far too many people do carry guns and they are far too freely available.
Someone mentioned that guns don't kill people, people do. Well, actually, people with guns kill people. Without the gun there is no shooting.

I can't see that this will ever be resolved and it's just my opinion (along with everyone I know outside the US).

But what's to stop them pointing it at you (God forbid). That's the point.

I have my 45 in place of the BMW roundel on my hood with a string connected to the trigger which runs up the hood and windshield and then down my sunroof and attaches to the right paddle shifter.

It's been a back and forth debate for a while now. I just hope all who do own are licensed as such.
