Drive Train Slap?
This is the best way I can describe it. I have a manual 530D. At slower speeds (say around 30mph) if you press the accelerator on/off repeatedly when travelling at a constant speed you can hear what I can only describe the drive train shifting back and forth and making a clang/slap type of noise. This doesn't happen at higher speeds and gears, say 50mph+ in 5th/6th gear. I have also noticed this when changing gear and it appears to be harder to achieve a silent/smooth gear change these days in the lower gears
Not sure if it's me or some wear on a part somewhere. I can achieve a silent gear change when trying. I have no clitch slip and have never had to change a clutch, bearing etc in 25 years of driving.
ps. I'm not someone who just lets go of the clutch and can/do drive smoothly.
Is this the norm and I've just started noticing it, or is something on it's way out somewhere....?
Any ideas from you manual gear box drivers out there?
Thanks.
Ian.

Finally got this sorted! Got sick of the noise and more tricky smooth gear changes. Took it to the local dealer and it turns out there is a rubber bearing where the prop shaft enters the diff. Had this changed and it's like I have a new car!
Through daily use I did not realise how bad it was, but with it fixed it's so obvious. No more back and forth shift of the drive train.
Had this for nearly a year so I would say this started somewhere in the 90,000 mile range (now at 101K).

That's the great thing about these cars. If taken care of, they always feel like a new car
Out at the moment so only got my BlackBerry. Will have a look at the parts diagram when I get home.
While it was faulty, I must have mastered the smoothest gear change ever without mechanical assistance! I could chauffeur the Queen!
