Does the 545i have fly-by-wire?

No, the E-class, as well as the CLS and SL still have the brake-by-wire system. Since the introduction of that system, the manufacturers have figured out how to deliver the same benefits with a traditional hydraulic system.

As for the drive-by-wire system, my 97 E-class had it, so I would imagine BMW has had it for at least that long as well.

Ah... so they still have it but improved it... only a Merc Fan would know...

AFAIK, they haven't improved it at all. I think it's most telling that SBC is not featured on the new S-class. And I may be a Merc fan, but I will be an E60 owner

Steer-by-wire is illegal because of safety issues. I am surprise that they have brake-by-wire coz imagine what would happen if the electronics in your car fails.
