Apparently, if you could stop all the cows in the world from farting, the reduction in Methane emissions would enable us to keep puffing CO2 into the air from our cars without worry.

Bound to be an easier solution than getting the USA to reduce use of cars.
We would need a lot of corks......and perhaps some students or YTS.......

Indeed, I am a Chemical Engineer and I actually do research in automotive exhaust.

The Diesel is not much worse than the Otto engine in terms of emissions except the particulate.

We really need to separate CO, NOx, HCs, etc. from particulate. Two different things, two different ways to treat (the first with a catalytic converter, i.e., storage and reduction system or selective catalytic reduction system) and the second with either filters or catalytic filters.
DrJochen, perhaps you could explain how the BMW EU4 partiulate filter works?

As I understand it, the particulate filter traps all the particulate emissions for a while (min 180, max 1200 miles), then it burns them off in a "regeneration cycle" lasting approximately 10-15 minutes.

What I don't understand is how is this better than before? Sure, for most of the time the emissions are clean, but how bad is the pollution during the regeneration cycle? It seems like saving all your rubbish for 2 months then burning it on a bonfire - or am I missing something? Does the catlyst regeneration burn the particles in a "clean" way? That seems unlikely...

Whole idea is to collect "Big" amount of "soot" and burn it when there is enough. It's bit like oxidation catalysator, except instead of gas form (catalyte oxidate) it "oxidate" a.k.a burn those particles.

Particles get "stuck" on the road and around city air and wander to peoples lungs, causing problems. Problems which are similar to silicosis or asbestosis in worst case.

Have You heard about sootfires in chimneys. In particle filter it's deliberate.
