Apparently, if you could stop all the cows in the world from farting, the reduction in Methane emissions would enable us to keep puffing CO2 into the air from our cars without worry.

As I understand it, the particulate filter traps all the particulate emissions for a while (min 180, max 1200 miles), then it burns them off in a "regeneration cycle" lasting approximately 10-15 minutes.
What I don't understand is how is this better than before? Sure, for most of the time the emissions are clean, but how bad is the pollution during the regeneration cycle? It seems like saving all your rubbish for 2 months then burning it on a bonfire - or am I missing something? Does the catlyst regeneration burn the particles in a "clean" way? That seems unlikely...

Particles get "stuck" on the road and around city air and wander to peoples lungs, causing problems. Problems which are similar to silicosis or asbestosis in worst case.
Have You heard about sootfires in chimneys. In particle filter it's deliberate.
