Ya randomly AOL news had an article about that the other day how more and more americans are slapping M badges on, AMG badges on V12 instead of their V8 badges on-pathetic!! I mean anyone who knows anything about their cars, other Bimmer or Merc drivers are going to spot a fake right away and it is just laughable. Most car enthusiasts know the basics of the higher end cars and will spot the fake. So who does that leave left to trick? Odds are if someone is falling for the badge trick, they are unlikely going to even comprehend what the badge means. I am willing to bet most americans on the streets do not realize an M badge is any better than a 550 or whatever-maybe I am wrong but seems like a stupid move.
Reminds me of an experience I had in Shanghai in 2005. There was a guy with his "normal" BMW E60 who had slapped a M5 badge on the rear of his car. But he did it next to his 530i badge, which was also there. As a car enthousiast I had a good laugh, and I guess that other people would note the rear being quite "full" with badges. Bit overdone I guess.

Anyway, I have seen R6 diesels (Touring) without an M-package also driving around with an "M" badge at the rear overhere in Holland.

I was wondering after I read that it was a no-cost option, why tons of europeans do this and have no badge whereas I have never seen a debadged car here in the US unless the person did it afterwards and even then hardly ever see them. And its hard to argue that they do not look way better and cleaner without the badge so is it just the arrogance of americans in wanting everyone to know what they drive?

To be honest, 90 percent of girls I know and have met completely look at something like a badge-and do not know enough about the cars to recognize one model from another-so if your reason is to pick up chicks then I see.

But for me I could care less if people know what I drive-I just like the cleanest, nicest looking car on the road (or atleast try to be) and take pride in always having my car in tip top shape.

Just dont get it about america-basically why dont we debadge?
I don't debadge because I want people to know what just beat them at the stoplight. Do people in Europe debadge truly great cars--like Ferraris, Lambos, etc.? I've never paid much attention, but I have never been disappointed by being unable to see a badge in Europe when I want to know what model a great car is.

Yep.

Here in Germany it could happen that your neighbours laugh, because you bought a 5er and can't afford a bigger engine. And people who hate you for driving the fiver, because they can't afford one, will do damages to your car, because they know it hurts you. Putting the damage to a 545 or 550 they know that the driver just gets it painted and doesn't really care about the cost (in their thinking).

Also, as JSpira said, the environment thingie...
A lot of reasons, but mainly envy.
Very interesting. I'd never really thought of the reasons you two mention. I think a nice car could get scratched in the US whether or not debadged.

And, yes, cars get keyed in the US. I don't associate it with envy. I associate it with meanness.

I don't drive a mustang, just being sarcastic. But I'm still wondering what the White people in Phoenix drive out there - swooped up BMW's like his Before anyone makes another stereotypical or envious comment about another culture, remember what forum you are on This is E60 forums, we're supposed to talk about our BMW's not someone else's Mustang

Sleepyca31, put-up or shut-up, let's see your car
Be nice about races, including whites, in Phoenix. You might annoy me otherwise.

As P.T. Barnum said, "you will never go broke over-estimating the bad taste of the American people."
Stupid remark.

Znod,
Long time no see. Hope things go well to you!

Some conclusion that I've drawn from this thread is that Americans more of congratulating and encouraging a person when he/she is successful and achieves something, compared to other part of the world. In other words, Americans always encourage you for doing better and appreciate.
Sorry for being off track. Talking about debadge, there is a couple of views that I've seen that someone might want to be either:
1. Having a clean look
2. Posing or "Up-badge"-ing (poser). This is criticized by lots of folks here
3. Being humble/Shy (debadge)
4. Pretending (M5 or 550 with 520 badge slapped on)
5. Being for him/herself (M badge or M badge with existing badge)
Whatever it is, just keep in mind what you're driving.

Good one!

Over here I have even seen debadged Ferraris, etc.
But that might be for the cleaner look.

Anyways, there are also some posers here. I have just seen a funny one yesterday. A new 7er with 20' bling-bling's and on the trunk there was the M badge next to a 7... ///M7... Yeah, right... I was not able to take a pic of it, it looked so funny wrong...

I don't understand why Americans are driving anything above 520:s, anything else is plain stupid. A lot of traffic, low speed limits, bad roads and a cop around every corner...

Too late. He's already in the white house.
That's true--as though Tony is better. I suppose everyone has heard the joke about the 3 surgeons one-upping each each. The third one won the pxxsing contest. He had done surgery on a cowboy that was hit by a train while riding his horse. He boasted that all that was left was a cowboy hat and a horse's ass, and now he is President. May that's what an asshat is.
