I'm of the opinion that an iPad will do anything iDrive will do 10,000 times better and for 1/4 the cost. it just seems like soooo much money and effort for something that still isn't as good as any tablet out on the market, but hey that's just me.

BMW has now gone fully to the 'iPad stuck on the dash' aesthetic with NBT iDrive. they should get a clue and just install a docking port on the dash and ship every car with a BMW branded ipad mini.
I was thinking about CIC upgrade for my 09/2008 530i LCI. Then I found out about NBT retrofit which would cost similar amount of money. So I said don't worry about CIC and go for NBT. If I were to get all parts from bimmerretrofit or bimmer-tech it was going to cost me around $3200 USD.

After the end cost appeared to high for me, I have started to think about phone screen mirroring such as AirPlay for my iPhone. As KyleB said, smartphone would give me not 10,000 but unlimited times more than what NBT could. New apps and updates on smartphones almost on a daily basis.

The show stopper is CCC screen resolution (640 x 240)

CCC = 640 x 240
CIC = 1280 x 480
NBT = 1280 x 600

Even NBT screen resolution is lower than new generation smartphones. According to some ppl NBT screen wouldn't work with CCC. So what's the point of implementing a system to mirror iPhone 6 plus to CCC screen???

I think I gave up .....

Are you talking about the speaker issue when retrofitting a CIC with hifi audio ($676)? If so see the attached PDF for the wiring diagram I used to restore the missing bass after the retrofit.

If you are wiling to do a bit of work you can find a CIC head unit and screen from a wrecked 2009-2010 E60. You will need to watch www.car-part.com or www.lkq.com until one becomes available, but the price makes it worth it. I was able to get my head unit and screen from a 2010 E60 for $500 shipped.

For those who don't want to cut any wires, a great solution is to use a quadlock extender for ~$20. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ql/141227219779

Did you need anything else to enable it Navigation, Voice Control etc.? An adapter of some sort?

Very usual information. Thanks for that.

I found that finding a part (especially head units) on both sites are pretty hard due to:

Parts are not labeled public friendly
Cannot search based on series (5 series, 3 series)
No category for head units itself.

I wish they would make it easier.
