Wow. I can't believe some of you guys actually think glass is part of structural integrity. The only structure that glass is integral to is a drinking glass. [Automotive] Glass is far too weak/brittle to provide structural support. Think about it. Something that cracks, chips, etc. just from being hit with a rock is supposed to help with a vehicle's structural integrity?? No way. Why do you think cracks spread? It's because of the torsional forces being transferred to the glass as the vehicle turns, flexes, hits bumps, etc. Not to mention in most cases the front and rear glass is simply glued in. Ever notice how rubbery the adhesive is that holds the glass in? It's rubbery to absorb vibrations transferred up to the glass; otherwise, the glass probably wouldn't make it a few hundred miles before it cracked to pieces.

I went the cheap route and regretted it because my rain sensors won't work with aftermarket windshield. GO OEM and save yourself some headache like i'm going through. $800 is a great deal since i was quoted $1300 just for the part itself plus $200 labor.
BTW, I don't have an $800 quote.
Where did you get the $1300+$200 quote from? Was it a dealer or independent glass shop?

There is such a thing as an OEM windshield (or any other window) but there are also other sources of glass available and most often used by mobile window repair people, etc.

It's important to rembember that for cars with a HUD, a special HUD windshield is needed -- many mobile window repair people aren't aware of this requirement so be careful...
Hey Rudy, whats HUD stand for?

HUD stands for "Head Up Display." It is an option on the newer models which projects certain information such as speed, navigational directions, etc. onto the windshield.

I've always thought the difficulty in designing cabrios was the lack of a hard top roof - which really is vital to a cars structural integrity. But using glass to reinforce metal??? wow.
I'd have to agree with you Pukka - strange that such a "fragile" part (windshield) is used to strengthen the vehicle's structure....no wonder they crack so easily!! I would have thought the opposite, that you would want the windshield isolated via a rubber grommet or thick sealant from the rest of the car - so there is NO stress on the glass...

By the way, my dealer Rusnak (Westlake Village) also said they will need the car two days for the sealant to "cure"....and it was going to cost me between $1400 and $1700 to replace...that's just stupid...tried to "bully" me into using them by saying an aftermarket windshield "might" effect my warranty....sheesh

I would be worried if you saw "waves" in your view. That would totally suck.

On my Mercedes W140, some smart a$$ tried to steal my ipod through passenger front window. The W140 had double-glass protective side windows, so he couldnt get inside the car.

The next day I called in a mobile service guy and he replaced the window for $400.00. It looked pretty good.

My windshield has cracked and is in need of replacement. I'm wondering if anyone has had theirs replaced with a non-BMW windshield, and if so, are you happy with it? Does anybody know what the difference might be (other than the missing emblem)?
My X3 windshield cracked into pieces after a small stone hit it. I have asked BMW windshield dealers on how much the replacement could cost. But I changed my mind and got a non-BMW windshield and it fits perfectly. I am happy with it and the rain sensors are doing good. They said that BMW WINDSHIELDS are softer so I preferred to get a non-BMW.

You will pay around $500 (could be higher by a few hundred depending on the car) to replace the windshield at most independent auto glass shops. Some small spider cracks can be repaired at those shops before they grow and destroy the windshield if I remember correctly. auto glass

Well said, Doc. You have expressed my findings and sentiment precisely. At only 5,000 miles, (90% in town slow), I have countless pits in it...

What I am so curious about is how do you guys get your dealer (my dealer loves me as I've bought perhaps 8 Bimmers from him and all cash) to replace a pitted or cracked windshield under a warranty? I can't even get him to replace my wife's new X3 battery under the warranty because she is a bad girl with her nasty short trip driving habits.

Last pitted windshield I turned in to USAA insurance caused me to be terminated (3 claims in 3 years violated USAA's post 911 Underwriting Standards).
