Have a 2005 525 US model... BMW assist provides GPS tracking if stolen. I have the certificate and activated it through the BMW assist button up near the sunroof button. When I activated it, the BMW assist personnel was able to tell me exactly where I was... I was at work when I did it.

Also, the tilt work VERY WELL! Without realizing that I had locked the car, I was taking my snowboard from the roof rack... The alarm went off when I leaned against the car slightly. I was realy surprised.

Also, my insurance company gave me a rebate and discount because of the alarm and GPS tracking. Saved about $600 on the year.

Hopes this help someone.

To make sure they can track the car you have to ask them where it is when you are NOT calling them from the car. When you call them from the car your car sends the data on YOUR request...

But they advertise that they can do it on MY05's, so I think they can...

Stolen Vehicle Recovery started on cars built after 10/04.
If your car is stolen #1 call the Police to file your report #2 then call BMW Assist Response Center toll free at(888)333-6118 the center remotely activates your system to locate your car.
cheers

I thought the valet key would not start the car only open the doors so there is no chip inside it?

No. The valet key DOES start the car. The valet needs to park the car...

Does start car--doesn't unlock trunk or glove box, so you can lock stuff there.

I own a brand new 525i. I am slightly insecure about parking the car in public places since I am unsure whether the alarm/immobilizer that comes with the car is really working well. The BMW salesman told me it is very secure and there is no need to install locks and steering bars on the car but he is unable to explain to me how advance the alarm is. Can anyone here tell me:
a) what are the advance features installed in the E60 525i alarm system ?
b) is it true that if the car is stolen, BMW will give me a brand new car ?
c) is there the need to put on a steering wheel lock/bar ? would that damage the electric steering wheel since it is very heavy ?

hi your bmw is darn near impossible to steal without the keys, if has been said, someone hitches or lifts the car the tilt sensor sets off the alarm. It is so difficult these days that here in the uk the baddies no longer try to steal the car they steal your keys!!!!! then they can drive it away. we have the fishing rod scam - they follow the target car home, look through your letter box (we have these usually set into the front door) and where do many of us drop are car keys - you got it - on the hall table!!! hey presto fishing rod through letter box and hike your keys.

Friend of mine got his brand new 3 series nicked like that last week. Although they did not use a fishing rod they just opened his front door, reached in and took the keys and were gone in 1 min flat!! You just got to hand it to em!!! So moral is take care of your keys.

I think the thieves also target valet parking "key boards" where they hang your keys while the car is parked.

Be cautious of valet setups where the keys are visible and unsecured...

Does the valet key work as it did on the E39? It sets off the alarm when the door is opened; and then stops when you start the engine? Or is there a way to unlock the car with the valet key without triggering the alarm?

I think I've read here on this forum this differs on Euro/US vehicles.
