If keys are electronically coded, how does the plastic valet key work?

There's a passive chip in the head of the valet key as well as the master keys...

Yes, and the 3 keys are tought to the car

You can bring a 4th key that is exactly the same, but the car will not start, it will only accept keys that have been tought to it, and you can tell it to stop allowing a key that has been stolen or lost ( at the dealer )

BMW Assist is now able to track stolen cars (in the US). That has changed...

I received and had to sign for "Stolen Vehicle Recovery Service Certificate" provided to allow BMW to use my Assist Password to track and recover. I am required to file a Police Report and provide BMW a Report File Number to allow BMW to activate the recovery action. The Certificate is provided to prove to insurance company should they provide discounts. In my case State Farm provided no more discount that what I already had for all the other BMW security features.

BMW uses ATX, a service provider, to provide mobile monitoring and support services using an imbeddedtelematics device which receives GPS signals and communicates with the response center via wireless and landline networks. Lots of legal jargon over the intended use and limits to its use.

I see. I just figured that the chip would need a metal key in order to transmit the data from the key to the car.

Think of it as one of those chips they use for merchandise anti-theft systems at stores. There is a small embedded chip in the packaging that is picked up by the sensors you walk between as you leave the store. There is a ring around the keyhole on the car that creates a field that picks up the presence of (and serial number) the embedded chip. No need for power to the chip, etc.

I guess it works a lot like the newer RFID tags that everyone is moving toward (rather quickly, thanks to Wal-Mart...)
