I found out that the diagnosis on my car is that the CAS module needs to be replaced. Apparently it is the module that powers up the fuel pump relay and it has died. As a result, the engine could not get any fuel.....
Has anyone ever heard about the CAS module? Does it power up anything else?
Rudy, have you heard of this one?

Wow Rudy, thanks for the info. This beast must really be in control of a lot of stuff. The SA told me it was linked to the key as well, but it may be involved with a lot of vehicle controls. He said it was in the dashboard.
It sounds like it has to be programmed by BMW before going to the dealer specifically for my vehicle VIN or something. He also said that it could be 3 days before they get the part
I took a look at these PDFs and they look pretty intense. It looks like that CAS controls nearly the entire car and is the heart of the electronic systems! If they don't get that back together well, I'm in big trouble

I'm familiar with certain parts needing to be "married" to the car before they'll work. On my E39, some sort of control unit needed replacing (DME maybe) and the dealer ordered a new one to be overnighted to the shop. They spent all day trying to get it to work and couldn't. It turns out that the unit that was sent to them had been returned by another dealer and was already married to another car!
If that wasn't bad enough, it happened two more times before someone at my dealer raised some serious hell with whomever sends the parts to them. Finally, a new part arrived and I was good to go.
You really can't blame the dealer for this, it's more like a flaw in the BMW parts distribution system that's at work here. You'd think they'd have a way of, 1) either doing a hard reset on the part to "divorce" the unit from another car or, 2) not accepting a returned unit if there's any evidence that a marriage may have taken place!
Hope your repairs go smoothly! Good luck!!

This is the exact same problem that I had on my 6 week old 530i
"My 530 E60 died on the road also while I was on Vacation 500 miles from home. We picked it up from the Performance Center in SC late May. It was only 6 week old. It took the dealer 8 days to repair the car. It took 2-3 day to get the CAS unit. After the part was received, the parts department would not release the part to the technician without a copy of my drivers license and registration by that time we were 240 miles from the dealer. I was so upset. On the fifth day the software loader would abort. The DME unit was not responding and again ordered. After 8 days at the dealer it would be very diffucult to recommend the car to anyone. BMW customer relations was also contacted. Lucky for BMW when we got home the JD Powers survey was sitting in my mail box."
I hope this helps, Good luck.

There must be a joke in here somewhere, but maybe I'll have lots of time to think about it

BTW, why did they need your drivers license and registraton????? If the car was broken and in warranty, what does it matter who brings it in for service?

Because you could be the thief -- the CAS system controls access and includes an immobilizer to help prevent theft without the key, etc.
Proper ID would prove you're the rightful owner so they can replace and recode the system to work again.
