Here you can find all about GT1 DIS and Modic soft for our Bimmers : http://ecubb.bmwecu.org/board/
You will need also Laptop with Rs232 port and OBD II cable to link your car with laptop, it costs about 70usd. Then you can do anything with your car at home dont need to go to stealer to diagnose your car. It is very helpfull.

To OP,
99% of time, there are no need to replace the transmission because the tranny itself is not at fault.
Somewhere SMG parts are acting weird. However, bmws don't like to diagnose smg tranny due to
lack of info and prefer to just replace the whole thing. The problem is, if you are under warranty, then
it's a good thing, however, since you are not, you should bring/two your car to a reputable indy shop.
They do much better for a lotttt cheaper.
