Quick update (I think I owe it to you). Crankshaft Position Sensor arrived yesterday, Break Pad Wear Sensors should arrive today and Break Pads should arrive tomorrow. I plan on installing all this myself over the weekend. I will post another update then. Thanks again.

I have been looking for half an hour after removing my air box and cannot find my CPS anywhere. Please help me locate it. Here are some photos I took with my phone.
BMW E60 Crankshaft Position Sensor, where are you??? - Imgur
UPDATE: I'm sure I was able to get to it...... with one finger, and I couldn't even see it. Unlike the 3-Series, in our car, the CPS is behind that big metal bracket that holds the engine in place shown in the second and last photo in the gallery above. There's absolutely no way I can get to it with the tools described in this thread. A mobile mechanic is on his way to finish the job. He's charging me $80 and I am putting the air box back. =\

I just checked my Bentley manual and it shows it on the rear of the block (middle of the sixth cylinder) directly below the starter. Are you sure you've found it?

Too bad you weren't able to get to it yourself, but $170 for parts and labor to fix it isn't too bad at all. Hopefully replacing your brakes goes smoothly.
