Question 535i JB4 PnP fault codes 2A94 and 5100

I am getting fault codes 2A94 and 5100 through my JB4 PnP from Burger Tuning (through steering wheel and gauges, since I don't have the USB cable) and I was able to find the first of them (2A94 Crankshaft sensor, signal). I still don't know exactly what that means even though I saw someone suggest in another thread that the JB4 may be getting disconnected, but I also can't find code 5100 anywhere.

Any ideas? Should I clear them? The car is running in cow (reduced power) mode.

EDIT: I actually meant 3100, not 5100. DanL corrected me below.

Recheck all wiring in the ECU and if everything is in place email Burger Tuning and they'll get back to you soon.

Did you recheck all of your connections?

I didn't want to go through the trouble of opening all that without at least some type of confirmation that that's what that code meant. And, again, I still have no idea about the second.

Are you sure the code was 5100 and not 3100? 3100 simply means boost pressure has been deactivated, i.e., you're in limp mode. I'm assuming you cleared the codes and they came back. If so, your crankshaft position sensor may be bad. The good news is that the part is fairly inexpensive and, from what I've read, pretty easy to replace.

You're absolutely right. I didn't read it correctly the first time. It's actually 3100 as you said, not 5100. I tried clearing codes twice and both times, the engine sputtered and shut off like when you run out of gas, same shaking. That can't be good, can it? I was able to start the car again every time, only it cranks for a while before it actually starts.

You still think this is the CPS? If so, I'll need to do some googling to see where I can get it and find some instruction video or documentation on how to replace it.

Thanks a lot for your help.

The symptoms seem to fit. You can pick up a new sensor online for around $100 (Tischer / getbmwparts.com has it for $97) and you'll need an E8 Torx socket along with some long extensions if you decide to remove the air box and tackle it from above instead of from underneath the car. Good luck!

Doesn't sound like something a rookie should be doing. LOL Maybe I'll pay for it. And if I am correct and this is the part (replacement from HELLA), I was able to find it cheapest in the following places:

Your Parts Search Returned 1 Part(s)
HELLA 009163381 Crankshaft Position Sensor | Frugal Mechanic

Is that it?

Thanks again!

No, that's not the correct part number. The part number you want is "13 62 7 525 015". You can get it from the same site (AutohausAZ) but the price is $99.51. Or you can just go to your local dealership and pick one up for $120 (or under $100 if you have a BMW CCA membership).

Do a search on N54 "crankshaft position sensor" DIY and you'll see that replacing it isn't too hard, it's just a pain to get to. But if you're not comfortable doing it or don't have the necessary tools any half-decent shop should be able to replace it in well under an hour.

You're the best. I found the DIY and realized I'd have to buy all the tools, meaning I'll probably be better off taking it to a mechanic, which I was anyways going to do, since I need to have my rear brake pads replaced (subject of another thread, since I will need advise on my choices too). Maybe he can throw this work in without charging me extra. I will however buy the part on my own.

By the way, in that DIY that I found, the person said:

"CrankShaft sensor 13 62 7 525 015, and the Gasket (O-Ring)
(NOT CAMSHAFT!!! my dad ordered that one set me back 3 hours -_-)
"

What exactly does he mean? Doesn't the part number already include exactly what you need?
